Book Reviews:

Backcountry Skiing Adventures: Maine and New Hampshire: Classic Ski and Snowboard Tours in Maine and New Hampshire

This book does a very good job covering exactly what is described by its title, no less, not much more. If you know how to x-c ski, it provides all the information you need to enjoy many backcountry tours in Maine and New Hampshire - from history, clothing and equipment, safety, to detailed information on 26 tours (e.g., map, distance, elevation, difficulty level, etc.) The author is undoubtedly best suited to write such a book because the book is about his passion.
What would add significant value to this book is a large color topographic map similar to AMC's winter trails map.

Backcountry Skiing Adventures: Vermont and New York: Classic Ski and Snowboard Tours in Vermont and New York

This book is the younger twin of Goodman's other book on this topic for Maine and New Hampshire, which I also gladly own.

It also covers one tour in western Massachusetts.

AMC Guide to Winter Hiking and Camping: Everything You Need To Plan Your Next Cold-Weather Adventure

It covers essentially everything you need to know for winter hiking and camping - wear, gear, food, drink, first aid, trip planning, etc. Though it apparently targets beginners, it is a pleasant and informative read for experienced hikers. I did quite a lot of winter hiking, summiting many peaks in New England, before this book was published. Reading this book still expanded my knowledge. The authors are avid hikers as well as leaders for youth hiking and camping. The content of this book is from their own experience, making this book very readable, relevant, and practical.
Like many other outdoor educational literature, this book provides very conservative instructions that even people with limited fitness and no experience can follow to minimize risks. The most important factor of safety - physical condition - is not discussed at all.
Overall, it is a very well-written book.
