Heating can be completely stopped by middle April in Eastern Massachusetts reducing a two-floor home's electricity bill to less than $70 (< 500 KWH) through late October. This requires good insulation, smart management of energy efficient windows, skylights to allow radiation in during the day and prevent radiation out at night.
One can survive heat waves in New England easily with smart home management. The Atlantic Ocean is a giant air conditioner., so is is relatively cool at night in coastal areas.
- Install high energy efficient windows such as those from Power Home Remodeling.
- Open all windows at night to cool the home as much as possible.
- Close all windows when the outdoor temperature exceeds the indoor temperature.
- Minimize cooking.
